On June 22nd, 2013 the Western Maryland Jaycees will host its 3rd annual Tri-State Wing-Off at Canal Place located in Downtown Cumberland.  Over the past 2 years, the Wing-off has grown to be one of Cumberland’s own premiere events of the summer and continues to surpass expectations.  It has been recognized by the Cumberland City Council for its efforts to promote local business and also awarded as one of four events of the year by the state of Maryland Jaycees chapter.

For an entire day, several wing vendors from the Tri-State area compete by selling their wings to the crowd in efforts of winning one of the events titles.  The awards given are: Best Overall, Most Unique, Best Sauce, Best Dry-rub and Hottest.  WQZK also broadcasts live at the event and they give out their own award to their favorite wing.  Live entertainment is supplied all day by many of the area’s best musicians who often donate their time to support the cause.  Alcoholic and Non alcoholic beverages are on site at reasonable prices and non wing vendors selling such items as ice cream, pop corn and funnel cakes have also been on site.  The Tri- State Arts Bus is available for the kids on the grounds and raffles and giveaways are available throughout the day.

The goal of the Tri-State Wing-Off is not only to create a fun-filled day for children and adults but by holding this event, the Jaycees also:

  • Increase foot traffic to the Downtown area
  • Promote small business for a number of the area’s restaurants
  • Give non-wing vendors and businesses a place to promote themselves to a wide demographic of people
  • Draw a number of non-Cumberland citizens to the area
  • Give visitors from the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad and the Great Allegheny Passage a fun event to attend that they could enjoy during their visit
  • Raise money for organizations and beneficiaries in need

Over the past 2 years, the Western Maryland Jaycees have donated a monetary donation that sums $6,000 to the Tri-State Community School for the Fine Arts with proceeds generated from the Wing-Off.  It has also helped generate funds for a donation of $500 to the Children’s Miracle Network as well as support other events hosted by the Jaycees.

This event is a prime example of how businesses and organizations pull together to help out the community and those in need.  If it weren’t for not only the Western Maryland Jaycees but businesses like Western Maryland Distribution, The Final Touch/Riverside Sports, First Peoples Community Federal Credit Union and Rocky Gap Lodge this event would not be possible.  Moving forward, the Western Maryland Jaycees welcome all business and organizations to join in efforts to make the Tri-State Wing-Off a success.  For information about how you or your group can help, please contact:
